Free Screening at University Med Center Brings 100+ Participants

NEW ORLEANS, LA (March 28, 2017) – Four people learned that they are in danger of developing large abdominal aortic aneurysms and thoracic aortic aneurysms during a free screening March 25, that brought 116 people out on a rainy Saturday morning.

The information session and ultrasound screening are the first step for some individuals, who may not have heard of AAA or thoracic aneurysms. For others, such as several participants who noted they have a family history of AAA, it was valuable information to provide some peace of mind. The painless ultrasound is simple and noninvasive.

“My grandmother passed away from an abdominal aneurysm and my mom has one currently,” said one participant.

Another said, “It is a silent killer, what you don’t know could kill you. Therefore find out before it kills you.”

This free screening event was provided by AAAneurysm Outreach and W.L. Gore., with support from Aetna, PJs Coffee of New Orleans, Blue Cross Blue Shield and other community partners.

“AAAneurysm Outreach is a phenomenal program helping to bring about the awareness of aortic aneurysm disease. It was an honor to take part in the screening program,” said William Risher, M.D.

Many of those who participated had lost loved ones to this silent killer. Dr. Risher provided a formal presentation about aneurysms, and met individually with all participants who had questions or concerns about their own risks.
